Designed and developed by U of T, this learning and discovery tool helps you choose the right model for a particular project or task, offering full transparency on cost and performance in the process. We’re building AI literacy and responsible adoption through institutional AI infrastructure.
Try the Model Comparison Tool
U of T’s Model Comparison Tool is currently available by request to faculty, librarians, and staff. Student access is coming soon.
Eligible users can log in with their UTORid and request access. Please ensure you are connected to UTORvpn.
Take a video tour
For a sneak peek before requesting access, watch a short video tour.
This video demonstrates the Model Comparison Tool’s features, such as side-by-side completions, search filters, and more.
Sovereignty and security.
Data sovereignty is defined as Canada’s right to control access to and disclosure of its digital information subject only to Canadian laws. You can learn more about digital and data sovereignty in Canada on the federal government’s digital sovereignty page.
For projects with high sovereignty needs, the Model Comparison Tool offers models that are hosted at U of T. For projects where lower data sovereignty is acceptable, you can select models that U of T manages and hosts through a vendor (e.g. Microsoft Azure). For more information on institutionally-managed hosting solutions, visit the ITS Private Cloud page.
The Model Comparison Tool is built and operated by the AI Kitchen, the University of Toronto’s secure AI hub for responsible experimentation and adoption. To connect with the AI Kitchen, email us at ai.kitchen@utoronto.ca
Model Comparison Tool: Here's how it works
Pick your models
Choose up to six from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Mistral and more, including models hosted in U of T's own data centres. Filter by capability, cost, or where a model runs.
Go beyond text
Compare image-generation and embedding models with the same one-prompt flow. Generated images appear side by side, ready to copy or download.
Compare responses and metrics
Responses stream in side by side while tokens, cost, and time are tracked for each one. Give any response a thumbs up or down and your preferred models rise to the top.
Keep what you learn
Export a comparison as an HTML file, re-run prompts from your session, and check the Cost tab before you spend.

U of T continues to build institutional capacity to evaluate, compare, and responsibly adopt AI in a way that aligns with our values and our security requirements. Whether you’re designing similar infrastructure, building policies around AI use, or teaching faculty and students about model differences, we’re here to help with secure and vetted tools, guidance, resources, and more.
